There are usability problems that deter surgeons from accepting the sheathed or retractable scalpel designs. It’s a well known fact that surgeons prefer to use conventional reusable scalpel handles. However, conventional reusable scalpel handles are unsafe because removal of blades is a difficult, hence risky procedure. Blades may sometimes break. Blade remover devices are expensive.
In recognition of this, AORN in its 2011 document ‘Sharps Safety in the OR-Lets Walk the Talk,’ AORN endorses, “Use next generation safety scalpel handles that will work with the any standard blade.” The SAFhandleTM reusable metal safety scalpel has the exact shape, dimensions, weight, grip and balance of a conventional scalpel and does not require the surgeon to change their technique. The SAFhandleTM reusable safety scalpel allows for ‘no-touch’ removal of blade, in compliance with OSHA and CDC requirements. It dispenses with the need for blade remover devices. The SAFhandleTM safety scalpel requires very little training to use (see video). The handle prevents the possibility of the blade breaking during procedure or disassembly. The SAFhandleTM reusable safety scalpel, used in conjunction with work practice controls such as hands free transfer trays or neutral zones, offers the optimum balance between employee safety and the delivery of optimal healthcare to patients.
According to Outpatient Surgery Magazine’s online poll on the rate of conversion of currently available safety scalpels in healthcare facilities, “Out of 57 responses, nearly three- fourths reported futility in trying to convert their surgeons to safety scalpels: 25 percent can’t even get surgeons to trial them and another 44 percent say their surgeons tried, but didn’t like them.”
2 – ‘No-touch’ blade removal.
3 – Requires very little training.
4 – Compatible with most blades.*
5 – Provides clear view of the surgical site.
6 – Can be easily used in either hand.
7 – The handle strengthens the blade and enhances cutting action.
8 – No change in methods and equipment for cleaning and sterilization.
9 – Suitable and safe for Arthroscopy.
10 – Reduced risk of retained blades. Handle design prevents the blade breaking, disassembling during procedure and against sudden movements and collisions.
11 – Graduated handle.
12 – Durable German stainless steel handle with extended life.
13 – Provides an easy and cost effective way to comply with OSHA, CDC, ACS , AORN requirements.
* reinforced back blades are not compatible.
